Presten – West Pillar

One of the best long free climbs anywhere
Presten, “the Priest”, is a 500 m pillar of beautiful granite rising straight from the ocean. It’s the most famous and sought-after route in Lofoten, and likely one of the best long free climbs you’ll ever do: a short approach, then pitch after pitch of varied climbing on a clean granite wall above the emerald Norwegian Sea.
Presten is a few minutes down the road from Henningsvær, a classic fishing village taken over by climbers and outdoor people every summer. The West Pillar is 12 pitches with fantastic climbing up to US 5.10 / NO 6 / FR 6a+. If you have the skill, it’s a must-do while you’re in Lofoten.
Climb it with one of our mountain guides and you’ll do it in good style, and likely find a new favourite route. Many guests climb a day or two with their guide to warm up first. Contact us for more information.
You’ll meet your guide at our office in the morning for a coffee and a briefing before the 20-minute drive to the parking. The approach is a 10-minute hike.
The route is 12 pitches up to grade 6/5.10/6a+, with excellent climbing throughout. The descent is a one-hour hike back to the road.
