Stetind – South Pillar

Twelve pitches up Norway’s national mountain
Stetind’s South Pillar is a long, technical climb for experienced climbers. First climbed in 1936 by the Norwegian climbing legend and philosopher Arne Næss, it’s graded 5.10 and is a demanding route in a high alpine setting.
If you’re after a long, aesthetic rock climb with splitter cracks and solid granite, look no further. Stetind stands at the head of Tysfjord and dominates the skyline with its unique shape and sharp lines rising straight from the fjord. The day takes you through magical coastal forest and past alpine lakes to a clean granite pillar, with sustained, enjoyable climbing all the way to the large, flat summit.

Stetind is on the mainland, about an hour south of Narvik. From Lofoten you take the ferry across the Vestfjord; it’s roughly four hours from Svolvær.
The route is 12 pitches up to 5.10 (Norwegian grade 6), so you need to be comfortable following that grade over a long day.
Starting point is just south of the Stetind tunnel at the parking lot. Our guides will contact you with further information a couple of days before the trip.
Climbing shoes for the route, plus mountaineering or approach boots for the hike in. Your guide will advise.
If we have to cancel, we refund your money or move the trip to another day.
